This Code of Conduct ("Code") outlines the standards of behavior expected from all participants, including members, guests, volunteers, and staff, in all activities and events organized by the Oceanside Chess Club (referred to as "the Club," "we," "us," or "our"). The purpose of this Code is to ensure a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment for everyone involved with the Club. By participating in any Club activity, you agree to adhere to this Code. Failure to comply may result in disciplinary action, including but not limited to suspension or expulsion from Club activities.
1. General PrinciplesAll participants are expected to:
- Treat everyone with respect, dignity, and fairness, regardless of age, gender, race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, disability, or chess skill level.
- Refrain from any form of harassment, discrimination, or bullying, whether verbal, physical, or digital.
- Act with integrity and honesty in all interactions with the Club and its members.
- Respect the property of the Club and others, and report any damage or misuse to Club officials immediately.
- Follow all rules and guidelines set forth by the Club, including those specific to tournaments, meetings, and other events.
The following behaviors are strictly prohibited:
- Harassment: Any unwelcome conduct, including but not limited to verbal comments, physical actions, or written communication, that creates a hostile or intimidating environment.
- Discrimination: Any action or behavior that excludes, marginalizes, or disadvantages individuals based on their age, gender, race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, disability, or any other protected characteristic.
- Bullying: Any repeated or severe behavior intended to humiliate, intimidate, or harm another individual.
- Violence or Threats: Any act of physical violence, threats of violence, or aggressive behavior.
- Cheating: Any form of dishonesty or violation of tournament rules, including but not limited to the use of unauthorized aids or manipulation of game results.
- Disruptive Behavior: Any action that interferes with the orderly conduct of Club activities, including excessive noise, inappropriate use of electronic devices, or refusal to follow instructions from Club officials.
- Substance Abuse: The use, possession, or distribution of illegal substances or alcohol on Club premises or during Club activities.
If you witness or experience any behavior that violates this Code, you are encouraged to report it immediately to a Club official or by emailing [email protected]. All reports will be treated confidentially and investigated promptly and fairly.
4. Disciplinary ActionsThe Club reserves the right to take appropriate disciplinary action against any individual who violates this Code. Actions may include, but are not limited to:
- Verbal or written warnings.
- Temporary suspension from Club activities.
- Permanent expulsion from the Club.
- Reporting of illegal behavior to the appropriate authorities.
Club officials, including the Board of Directors, arbiters, and volunteers, are responsible for:
- Enforcing this Code consistently and fairly.
- Addressing violations promptly and appropriately.
- Leading by example and upholding the highest standards of conduct.
- Ensuring that all participants feel safe and respected.
This Code of Conduct is subject to change at the discretion of the Board of Directors. Any amendments will be communicated to all participants and posted on the Club’s website. It is your responsibility to review this Code regularly to ensure compliance.
7. AcknowledgmentBy participating in any activity or event organized by the Oceanside Chess Club, you acknowledge that you have read, understood, and agreed to abide by this Code of Conduct. Failure to comply may result in disciplinary action as outlined above.
